American Literature Lecture 11 Introduction about Mark Twain Mark Twain (1835 1910)Samuel Langhorne Clemens Life experience: Born in Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835. When he was four, Twains family moved to Hannibal. In 1847 the death of his father brought an end to his carefree days, and he had to go to work at the age of 12 as a printers apprentice. In 1865, he wrote a humorous story, The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, which became very popular and brought nationwide attention. His travelogues were also well-received 卡拉維拉斯縣臭名昭著的跳蛙 During his seventeen years in Hartford (18741891) and over twenty summers at Quarry Farm, Twain wrote many of his classic novels:The Prince and the Pauper (1881) 王子與貧兒Life on the Mississippi (1883) 密西西比河上的生活 A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court (1889) 誤闖亞瑟王宮 Twains greatest fame and his importance in American literature rest largely on his two best known novels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer 湯姆索亞歷險(xiǎn)記 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn 哈克費(fèi)恩歷險(xiǎn)記 The adventures of Tom Sawyer is about a boy who is always in trouble, growing up along the Mississippi river in the 1800s. Tom and his best friend Huck play hooky, pull pranks, and even run away to become pirates. Tom Sawyer is one of the best stories ever about friendship. About Marks family. Mark Twain died of illness on April 21, 1910. When he passed away, newspapers around the country declared, “The whole world is mourning.” Mark Twain gave pleasure real intellectual enjoyment to millions, and his works will continue to give such pleasure to millions yet to come. His humor was American, but he was nearly as much appreciated by Englishmen and people of other countries as by his own countrymen. He has made an enduring part of American literature.
