Teaching aims: Enable the Ss to use the modal verbs (must, might, could and can’t) to make inferences.
Get the Ss to be used to doing the cloze and reading training during a limited period so as to maximum their study efficiency.
Teachi
2、ng key points: the usage of can and could; the usage of may and might; the usage of must and need.
Teaching difficult points: the negative reply to sentence including either must or may.
Teaching procedures:
1) Greeting and Listening (Listening is designed as the first step because the Ss can pa
3、y more attention when they are clear-minded during the whole listening period. Attached pls. find the listening material about text 5
2) Revision
Revise what we’ve learned last week about the sentences of unreal condition through translation exercises as follows.
1. 如果我是你的話就會去參加會議。(If I were you,
4、 I would attend the meeting.)
2. 如果他昨天來這兒的話就會看見他的老朋友。(If he had e here yesterday, he would have seen his old pal.)
3. 如果明天下雨,你怎么辦?(What would you do if it should rain tomorrow.)
4. 如果我是老師的話我就會對學(xué)生嚴(yán)格。If I were a teacher, I would be strict with my students.
5. 如果明天下雪,他們就不會出去。If it should snow tomor
5、row, they wouldn’t go out.
6. 如果沒有你們的幫助,我們就會陷入困境。(If it weren’t for your help, we would get into trouble.)
3) Dictation
I dictate the following words embracing 10 words and 5 phrases.

Get the Ss to read 3as
7、in both Section A and Section B individually and correct their pronunciation if necessary.
Ask the Ss if they have any questions about the unit. Whoever es up with a question will be encouraged and rewarded with a piece of paper shield.

A. Explain the meaning of modal verbs.
1.can 表能力 e.g. Can you swim? I can/can’t lift that box.
表允許 e.g. You can go now.
表可能性(跟may意思相近) e.g. Can you go with us?
表推測(主要用于否定句和疑問句)e.g. T

2. could
I 是can的過去式,表示過去有能力及過去存在的可能。
e.g. He couldn’t go that day .那天他不能去。(可能性)
He couldn’t answer all the questions when he was a pupil.不是所有的問題他都能回答。(能力)
II 表示委婉地提法(現(xiàn)在時)
e.g. Could I speak to Mr
10、. Zhang,please?(電話里)請找張先生接電話好嗎?
(3)表示吃驚。
e.g. He couldn’t be a thief.他不可能是個小偷。
How could he be so silly?他怎么會這么傻?
3. May
I 表示允許
e.g. You may e here whenever you like.你想什么時候來就什么時候來。
表示客氣或委婉的請求用May,回答是也用May就顯得冷淡。所以最好改用熱情的答語。
e.g. ——May I smoke here?我可以在這里吸煙嗎?
——Yes,please./Certainly.
11、可以./當(dāng)然可以。
II 表示不確定的推測
e.g. She may be right.她可能是對的。
4. might
I 用在疑問句中,表示委婉、客氣
Might you make some room for me?您可以給我讓點地方嗎?
II 作為may的過去式,表不確定的推測
e.g. They thought they might be there on time. 他們認(rèn)為他們可以準(zhǔn)時到達(dá)那里
5. must
I 表示必須
e.g. you must e earlier next time.下次早點來。
在回答由must引導(dǎo)的一般疑
12、問句時,若表示肯定,用must。若表示否定,用needn’t或don’t have to。因為mustn’t表示禁止、不許可。
e.g. ——Must we all e tomorrow?明天我們必須全部來嗎?
——Yes,you must./No,you needn’t./No,you don’t have to.是的,必須全部來。/不,沒必要。
II 表示很有把握的推測。
e.g. Miss Gao must be in the office.高老師一定在辦公室里。
This must be Wang Hai’s book.這一定是王海的書。

His illness is due to bad food.他生病是由于吃了不好的食物。(多作表語)

That was on account of lack of exercise. 那是由于缺乏鍛煉。
Owing to the rain, the match was called off. 由于下雨,比賽取消了。
5) Consolidation
Get the Ss to do the exercises of exam paper relating to Unit 5. They will be asked to finish the multipl
18、e choice, rewriting, and blank filling first. Next I will check the answers together with them. Finally I will give my explanation for the questions but not for all of them. Only in places where the Ss make mistakes will I offer clarification.
Since the cloze and reading parts have already been fin
19、ished by the Ss at home, I will check the answers directly. As for the cloze, I’ll let the Ss try to illustrate by themselves now that the method of parison has been taught for many times. If any mistakes, I will provide my illustration. The exam paper is attached.
6) Cloze and reading Training (fo
20、r a limited time only)
The Ss are allowed to plete the cloze within 5 min, reading 4 min and a half.
The Ss are to be guided to employ the context fully to finish the cloze.
Get the Ss to be used to skimming the first paragraph and the first plus the last sentences of each paragraph so as to qui
21、cken the reading.
7) Sum
Let the Ss take a look at the blackboard to recall what they’ve learned today. I will provide my summary as a supplement after their recollection.
8) Assignment
Ask the Ss to have a detailed review of their notebook, exam paper as well as other training materials.
Ask the Ss to finish the cloze and reading parts of the mid-final exam paper at home within limited time.
