Today, a large number of families in Great Britain buy furniture, household goods and cars by installments. In the U. S. A. , the figure is much higher than that in Great Britain, and people there spend over 10 percent of their ine on the installment plan. The price of an article bought on installments is always higher than the price that would be paid by cash. There is a charge for interest. The buyer pays one quarter or one third of the price as a down payment (預(yù)付定金) when the goods are delivered to him. He then makes regular payments, weekly or monthly, until the full price is paid up. The legal ownership of the goods remains with the seller until the final payment has been made. Installment buying has advantages and disadvantages. It can help couples with small ines to furnish their homes and start housekeeping. It increases the demand for goods, and in this way helps business and employment. There is, however, the danger that when business is bad, installment buying may end suddenly, making business much worse. This may result in a great increase in unemployment. If the people on the installment plan lose their jobs, they will probably not be able to make their payments. If great numbers of people are not able to pay their installment debts, there is a possibility that businessmen cannot collect their debts and will therefore lose money. If businessmen lose money or fail to make a satisfactory profit, it bees more likely to have a depression (蕭條). This is why, in some countries, the government controls the installment plan by fixing the amount of the down payment and installments to discourage people from buying more than they can pay for on the installment plan. 56. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about the installment plan? A. A lot of British families use the installment plan. B. More than 10 percent of American families buy things on installments. C. Americans depend more on installment than British people do. D. Americans spend one tenth of their ine on installment buying. 57. Goods bought on installments are more expensive than goods bought by cash because ________ . A. the buyer has to pay extra money as interest B. the delivery of the goods charges extra money C. the buyer has to pay a down payment D. the service offered by installment plan charged extra money 58. What will happen to a buyer if he fails to make the full payment for an item bought on installments? A. He might lose his job. B. He will stop owning the item he has bought. C. He will have to sell what he has bought. D. He will go into debt. 59. The advantage of installment buying might include all the following EXCEPT that ________ . A. purchasing power is strengthened B. employment might be increased C. people develop a good habit of saving money D. young couples are able to furnish their homes 60. But according to a new report, African farmers also have ideas that could help the world fight hunger and poverty (貧困). Danielle Nierenberg from the Worldwatch Institute in Washington spent a year visiting twenty-five countries south of the Sahara. In Nairobi, Kenya, for example, Ms. Nierenberg found women farmers growing vegetables just outside their doorsteps in the Kibera settlement. She says they are finding ways to make their lives better. The women feed their families and sell their surplus. They use the money to send their children to school. Last year, about 925, 000, 000 people worldwide did not get enough to eat. Half of all people in the world now live in and around cities. Researchers like Ms. Nierenberg are looking increasingly at creative ideas to feed those who don’t have enough good food to eat. She says there are a lot of lessons that people in the Western world can learn from Africa. And what they are doing can certainly be done in other developing countries. Farmers in the developing world lose between twenty and forty percent of their harvest before it ever reaches market. There are many reasons why food gets wasted. Farmers are without electricity and cold storage (倉(cāng)庫). They lack good seeds and fertilizer (肥料). They lack good roads. Conditions like these keep small farmers in poverty. Ms. Nierenberg says more attention needs to be paid to protecting harvests. She says, “Given all that we invest in producing food in the first place, we need to devote the same amount of attention to making sure that it is not wasted. ” In Nigeria, village processing centers are helping farmers reduce their losses and earn more money. The centers process cassava, a root vegetable, into basic food products. In Uganda, the Worldwatch report says some schools are teaching children how to grow local kinds of crops. And in South Africa and Kenya the report praises the breeding (培育) of local kinds of livestock. These animals may produce less milk or meat than other breeds, but they can survive heat and drought (干旱) conditions. 64. We could learn from the new report in Para. 1 that ________ . A. Africa has the world’s highest hunger rate B. African farmers have ideas to help fighting hunger and poverty C. women farmers grow vegetables in the Kibera settlement D. women farmers grow vegetables to send their children to school 65. The underlined word “surplus” in Para. 1 is closest in meaning to ________ . A. private vegetables B. side products C. leftover vegetables D. home-made products 66. The main idea of the last paragraph is ________ . A. what African countries do to fight hunger B. a report of the Worldwatch C. that village centers are helping farmers D. how to raise animals that can survive heat and drought 67. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE according to the passage? A. Farmers in developing world often lose some of their harvest. B. Small farmers in developing countries often suffer poverty. C. Farmers should pay more attention to protecting their harvest. D. Attention should be paid to saving food instead of producing food. (D) [xx荊州模擬] Believe it or not, the color of the tie Barack Obama wore to the inauguration(就職典禮) is now a hotly debated topic. The level of public interest in Obama’s tie might seem strange but many people believe his choice will symbolize the type of government he plans to run, as the color of a politician’s tie is thought to convey ideas of power, trustworthiness and more. ●Polities of ties. It may be the least practical item of male dress, but it is arguably the most expressive. In the UK and many other countries around the world, conservative(保守的)politicians may wear a blue tie and their liberal opponents a red one. In America, the colors go the other way round. The Republicans have in recent years bee associated with the color red, and the Democrats with blue. But in spite of this, Bush wears blue ties more often than any other color. ●What they mean? According to Sharon Haver, editor of focusonstyle. , in America the feelings associated with colors overrule their political significance. “A guy who wants to be regarded as strong and in charge would wear red, ” Haver says. Unsurprisingly, the business tycoon Donald Trump is known for wearing red ties. But what about blue? According to Haver, “Blue is a softer color. . . Look at the sky. It’s peaceful and calm and trustworthy. ” Selecting the right tie for the right occasion. ●Perfect job interview tie. Perhaps no other tie-wearing occasion is as important as the job interview. Gilchrist, the fashion expert, advises playing it safe and choosing a conservative one. Best choices are solids, stripes or small patterns. An excellent color is burgundy(深紅色)or another serious color. Avoid pink or yellow, which suggests that the wearer lacks gravity. Pattern ties, Gilchrist suggests, should be limited to a maximum of three colors. A striped tie is a safe choice as this is acceptable to everyone. Last, Gilchrist remends saving the expensive “hip” tie for those applying for glamorous creative jobs. ●Date-night tie. When picking out the right tie for taking a girl out on a date, spend more time considering color than pattern. According to studies, women are attracted to men wearing the color blue, because blue gives the image of a “stable, faithful, constant, always there” person. So what is the worst color to wear on a date? “Flattened caterpillar(毛蟲)yellow-green, ” according to Gilchrist, “it will repel both sexes equally. ” 68.
