What music am I playing? Its western classical music, isnt it? Yes, it is. I like western classical music. This one is by Johann Strauss. Youve heard of him, havent you? You like classical music, dont you? Now let’s go to page 38 to put language in use. ■Language practice Its western classical music, isnt it? You like classical music, dont you? Youve heard of him, havent you? He has never liked classical, has he? 1 Match the sentences in Box A with the question tags in Box B. On page 38, on the left, you see twelve sentences. Now read them and match them with the question tags on the right. 2 Write the missing question tags. Sally and John are talking about something. But the question tags are missing. Now read them aloud and write the missing question tags. 3 Work in pairs.Practise the conversation in Activity 2. Make sure you put the stress in the right places. Talk just as they do! Now read it and plete it with words from Activities 6 and 7 Write just as they do! (仿寫) Cao Xueqin was a writer, a novelist. He wrote classical stories and poems. People have read his novels for a long time. Their most popular novel is The Dream of the Red Chamber (紅樓夢, also known as A Dream of Red Mansions or The Story of the Stone and The Chronicles of the Stone (石頭記), by 曹雪芹 Co Xuěqn. Its easy to read. In China, all the learned people read this novel. They call it a most important Chinese novel.It is said that you can not understand Chinese culture if you do not read The Dream of the Red Chamber. 9 plete the conversation with the correct question tags. If you can, bring some of your favourite music into class so everyone can listen to it. Discuss in English your feelings about your music. I like the erhu (二胡) music. It is monly known in the West as the Chinese violin. It is a two-stringed bowed instrument. It produces sad, mysterious, joyful or voice-like melodies. It belongs to the huqin family of Chinese instruments, together with the zhonghu, gaohu, banhu, jinghu, and sihu. The erhu dates back to the 13th century. A notable poser for the erhu was Liu Tianhua, a Chinese musician. He studied Western music, too. Many of his works for the instrument from the 1920s are still played frequently. I love to play the pipa 琵琶. It is a traditional Chinese musical instrument. Sometimes it is called the Chinese lute. It has a pear-shaped wooden body. It has been played for nearly two thousand years of history in China, and belongs to the plucked category of intruments (彈撥樂器). 14 Make a poster about your favourite music and musicians.
