Unit 2 English around the world 一、閱讀理解 A My daughter Kelly is a cautious person. She needs to warm up situations, and is hesitant to try new things. When with close friends, she bees a leader who laughs loudly and chants. “Girls rule, boys drool.” But when that fort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous. This has been challenging for me at times. “Shy” is not a word that I think has ever been used to describe me. But this has been year of firsts for my girl that has filled her with a new sense of confidence. This year she moved to lap lane in swimming where she was preparing for a swim team. This year she learned to ride a bike without training wheels. And this year she pleted her first kids’ triathlon(三項全能). On Saturday, with a thunderstorm ing soon and my son’s birthday party later in the day, we all went out in the dark of the morning for Kelly to participate in her first triathlon. We practiced transitions from swim to bike to run with her, we got all the equipment she’d need, and we kept talking about the race. But as we waited the two hours for the older kids to finish before her turn, she held my leg a little harder and told me she loved me a few too many times. She was nervous but trying to keep it together. And then it was her turn. From the second she jumped into the water, my heart soared. My daughter transformed into the most confident human being I had ever seen. She dominated that swim, crushed that bike ride and ran to the finish with the biggest smile on her face. I can honestly say that I never felt so proud of someone in my entire life. It wasn’t because she did a sport or anything like that. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. All day I would find myself just looking over at her and smiling. She might be wearing the finalist medal but I felt like I won that day. I won the chance to see my girl shine. Shine on, sweet baby. 1.Kelly is nervous when ________. A. boys are around her B. she changes into a leader C. she is away from her mom D. situations are new to her 2.We can learn from Paragraph 3 that______. A. the race began in the early morning B. Kelly was eager for her turn in the race C. the whole family gave Kelly support D. her brother’s birthday party was delayed. 3.In the ending paragraphs the author “felt like I won that day” because Kelly________. A. Took part in the sport B. Expressed love to her C. Won the gold medal D. Changed pletely 4.What kind of person do you think Kelly is? A. Timid and determined B. Cute and confident C. Fearful and energetic D. Sociable and brave 【文章大意】本文講述了“我”的女兒Kelly是個慢熱型的人,和陌生人在一起她會很緊張很害羞,看到女兒贏得獎牌是作為父母最大的榮耀。 She needs to warm up to situations,is hesitant to try new things以及But when that fort zone is not around her, sheis shy and nervous.,可知Kelly是一個慢熱型的人,如果有新的情況,必然需要一段較長的時間適應(yīng),故選D。 It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before以及第六段中的I felt like I won that day,可知她已經(jīng)克服了她的恐懼了,故選D。 根據(jù)第一段最后一句when that fort zone is not around her, she is shy and nervous. It was because she was afraid of something and conquered that fear with confidence and a fire I hadn’t seen before. A。 B Best friends may be priceless but the cost of keeping the relationship alive is £23,870. According to a study, a BFF (Best Friend Forever) does not e cheap with devoted pals blowing £4,679 on birthday presents alone over a lifetime. And while it costs nothing to be a shoulder to cry on, bighearted Britons go the extra mile and spend £168 on pickmeups (提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch(艱難時刻) like the breakup of a relationship. Theres a further £242 spent on presents to show how much they mean from gifts bought on holiday to treats for no reason. And distance does not break up a close friendship as BFFs spend a whopping (巨大的) £18,000 on travel to see each other despite being miles apart because of university, jobs and marriage. The study by cashback site TopCashBack found on average BFFs who wed can expect £431 spent on them and a further £283 on gifts when they have children. And they can rely on their pals to help out when they move house as they will obtain £127 worth of housewarming presents and takeaways as well as putting in a shift with the packing and unpacking. The survey based on a friendship lasting 40 years found more than eight in ten adults with a BFF felt their friendships were worth every penny. TopCashBack spokesperson Natasha Smith said, “Those friendships which stand the test of time are often the most important in our lives. However, they e at a cost. From train tickets once a month to flights and a new dress for a wedding on the Italian coast, the price paid for having a best mate can soon add up. But when we asked people to pare their friendship with the monetary investment, only 14% thought their friendship was equal to their investment with the vast majority thinking it was worth more.” And while it costs nothing to be a shoulder to cry on, bighearted Britons go the extra mile and spend £168 on pickmeups(提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch(艱難時刻) like the breakup of a relationship.(第二段第二句) 分析:本句為復(fù)合句。while it costs nothing to be a shoulder to cry on為讓步狀語從句。主句為bighearted Britons go the extra mile...relationship。 1 What does the underlined word in Paragraph 2 mean? A.Ambitious. B.Generous. C.Troublesome. D.Energetic. 畫線部分后的“go the extra mile and spend £168 on pickmeups(提神物品) to get their mate through a rocky patch (艱難時刻) like the breakup of a relationship”就是對它的進(jìn)一步說明。 B。 2. To keep the relationship, where do BFFs spend most money? A.Buying birthday presents. B.Cheering up a friend in low spirits. C.Paying for holiday gifts and other treats. D.Going a particular distance to visit friends. 根據(jù)第二段中的“blowing £4,679 on birthday presents”“spend £168 on pickmeups(提神物品)”以及第三段中的“£242 spent on presents...from gifts bought on holiday to treats...”“spend a whopping (巨大的)£18,000 on travel to see each other”可知,為了維持一段友誼,花在旅途中的費用是最多的,所以選D。 3. What is Natashas understanding of BFF friendship? A.Its costly and unaffordable. B.Its expensive but worthwhile. C.Its rewarding but hard to keep. D.Its changeable but worth possessing. 根據(jù)最后一段中的“Those friendships which stand the test of time are often the most important in our lives. However, they e at a cost.” B。 4. How is the passage developed? A.By listing figures. B.By giving examples. C.By analyzing causes. D.By making parisons. Reasons to Take Part in Student Clubs and Organizations Many college students dont know what theyre missing by not taking part in the student clubs and organizations that are offered at most colleges and universities. Zoos are more than just a place of entertainment and education for people, but also a place __3__ animals are kept in safe enclosures. Children especially are __7__ (interest) in such animals on display and in terms of __8__ (education) value. I would say that the trip was worth every minute __9__ (spend). However, there are some of us who feel that animals shouldnt be kept in enclosures, but should rather be let out in the wild. Some feel that keeping animals in enclosures is a form of cruelty. But looking at it from another perspective, the same animals may not survive this far had they been left on their own in the wilderness because of the __10__ (present) of their enemies. But looking at it from another perspective, the same animals may not survive this far had they been left on their own in the wilderness because of the presence of their enemies.(第二段最后一句) 分析:這是一個復(fù)合句。looking at it...為現(xiàn)在分詞作狀語;had they been left on their own in the wilderness是省略了if的虛擬條件句,從句補(bǔ)充完整是:if they had been left on their own in the wilderness; because of... 故用of。 3. 故用where。 4. enjoy doing sth. 5.答案與解析:otherwise/or 考查副詞/連詞。 故用otherwise/or。 6. 故用was。 7. sb. be interested in sth.
