As a beginning writer, I was happy to be on my way, writing and learning as much as I could. With two little kids underfoot, as well as working full-time, it was really difficult to make time for writing, but I managed. Readers told me they laughed, cried or were inspired by my articles. But they didnt know what was really going on behind the typewriter. I was not a happy mommy, and found it difficult to enjoy the everyday little things in life. In short, I was not a happy person. I realized I had to make some changes. I started walking every morning. It cleared my head, allowed me time to think, gave me fresh air, and made me feel invigorated(精神煥發(fā)) and healthy. I was eating wisely, and the weight started to go. I started a new job, joined a monthly writing chapter, and was determined to keep up my walking. Finding the balance was sometimes difficult. But I was determined to fit in writing time because it made me happy. Sure I loved to watch the news and have my tea, but that wasnt what made me truly happy. My own happiness has shown through my family, my job performance and my attitude towards challenging situations. I again have readers telling me the effect my writing has had on them, with some able to get on with their own writing because of my articles. It was up to me to make it happen — my own happiness. One step at a time — one word at a time. And I did it. 21. What was a big challenge to the author according to the first paragraph? A: Writing good articles. B: Doing well at work. A: Practice makes perfect. B: Well begun is half done. C: Time and tide wait for no man. D: Happiness lies in your own hand. B William Berloni, 59, is Broadways dog expert, training and managing dogs for musicals and plays that need a well-behaved dog. He also works on movies and TV shows with all kinds of animals, including cats, pigs, sheep, snakes and rats. His retired (退役的) actors, including 30 dogs that have acted in shows such as “Annie” and “Oliver!” live with him and his wife on a farm in Connecticut. Berlonis main playmates as a kid were his dog, cat and rabbit, but he says he never thought he would bee a professional (職業(yè)的) animal trainer. He wanted to be an actor. But while working as an assistant for the pre-Broadway production of “Annie” in 1976, he was given the job of finding a dog to play Sandy. Berloni visited an animal shelter (收容所), where lost dogs and other pets are kept until they are adopted (收養(yǎng)). Shelters take in a lot of animals — so many that some shelters kill pets that arent quickly adopted. “I didnt know that animals were killed,” says Berloni, if a dog couldn’t be adopted quickly it was supposed to be put down. The dog, which Berloni named Sandy, turned out to be a perfect fit for the show after a little training. The pair learned from each other, with Berloni being better and better as a trainer. Sandy showed in almost all of the shows 2,377 Broadway performances and enjoyed retirement on Berlonis farm when the productions first Broadway run ended in 1983. Since then, Berloni has made a point of finding all his dogs at shelters. Nessa is one of his dogs who plays Toto in “The Wizard of Oz”. After about a year of working together, Berloni and Nessa are like old friends. Shes happy to lie on his leg, even when shes not performing.
