A Taylore is a kid who passes by to ride sometimes and help us with chores. Barely 15, she’s never short of advice, and one of her favorite pastimes is teasing me about being afraid to go too fast on a horse. Last summer four of us rode down the trail behind our woods: my wife Karen, Taylore, Taylore’s friend Kendall and me. I was riding my 13-year-old, Tawny. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason, I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飛馳). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on. Taylore brushed past my left leg and, seconds later, Kendall went by on my right. I realized Tawny was covering ground faster than I’d ever seen her. She strained every muscle in her body to catch up with the girls. It was like a truck winding over a mountain road without brakes (閘). Part of me felt perfectly in control, while another part screamed that I wasn’t. In half a mile I knew we’d be crossing the highway, so I prayed that the girls would be fine. I gave up calculating how long it might take before my horse would be tried enough to want to slow down. I was just about out of answers when I saw the girls slowing in front of me. Their horses were relaxed and fortable, not even breathing hard. Taylore’s face glowed. She gave me a high five. "Wow, you did well, "she said. " I knew you’d go fast when you were ready." No one in the group had even broken a sweat, except me. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. Karen claims I was showing off for the girls that day, and maybe she’s right. But I think I had something to prove. Because despite my wrinkles (皺紋), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart. And, like a horse on a warm summer day, I’m always ready to kick up my heels. 1. How did the race between the girls and the author begin? A. His horse’s gallop made the other horses want to catch up. B. He wanted to show off his riding skills for the girls. C. They wanted to know whose horse could run fastest. D. They teased him about being afraid to go too fast on a horse. 2. During the race, ___________. A. the author’s horse outran the girl’s horses the whole time B. the author was confident that Tawny was in control C. the girls were so anxious to win that they sweated a lot D. the author’s good performance took Taylore by surprise 3. When the race ended, the author’s heart pounded because ________. A. he was feeling thrilled and young B. it was really tough exercise for him C. he was worried that the girls might be in danger D. he felt quite embarrassed that he had lost the race 4. The phrase " kick up my heels" at the end can be replaced by _________. A. devote myself B. enjoy myself C. accept my challenge D. take part in running petition 【文章大意】文章描述作者和兩個女孩騎馬比賽,這讓作者感到興奮,也感到雖然自己上了年紀,但是有一顆年輕的心。 1. We were two miles from home when, for some unexplainable reason,I pushed Tawny into a gallop(飛馳). The other horses were anxious to catch up, and just like that, the race was on." 故選A。 3. I was still nervous from the crazy pace. My heart pounded too, but not from exercise. …Because despite my wrinkles (皺紋), glasses and gray hair, I was feeling young at heart." 故選A。 4. 根據(jù)文章最后一段的句子"like a horse on a warm summer day,"可知,作者感覺 自己像溫暖夏日的馬,總是準備好享受一番。 In this day and age, it may seem that getting two people with different views together to discuss them is a recipe for disaster. Just think about what would happen if you sat down and had an open and honest conversation with someone with pletely opposing views. Could it bring you closer together? However, the Human Library organization is counting on it. At a Human Library, people volunteer to bee “books” and make their experiences open and available. “Readers” are encouraged to ask them questions freely, and theyll get honest answers in return. There are no judgments, and no questions that are off limits. You wont find unpleasant ments, and you wont lose faith in humanity. At the Human Library, you actually feel better about the world you live in. You might even make a new friend! “The human books consist of people who have been discriminated by society,” said Ronni Abergel, the Human Library organizations founder, who has set out to build space for conversations that can challenge prejudices through dialogue. “The most pleasantly surprising thing about it is how close all the human books bee to one another,” he said. Human Libraries help to remind us there really is more, what unites us than divides us. And as events now spread throughout 82 countries, with the Human Libraries even set to launch soon in Pakistan and Jordan, you can tell that is a shared feeling. “We can spend billions and billions on trying to build up homeland security and our safety, but real safety es from having positive relations to other groups in your munity,” said Abergel. “Real safety is not going to e from building walls. Its going to e from reaching out and getting to know each other.” 【難句分析】“The human books consist of people who have been discriminated by society,”said Ronni Abergel, the Human Library organizations founder, who has set out to build space for conversations that can challenge prejudices through dialogue.(第五段第一句) 分析:該句為主從復合句。句中“who has set out to build space for conversations that can challenge prejudices through dialogue”為who引導的非限制性定語從句,補充說明先行詞Ronni Abergel;在該定語從句中,“that can challenge prejudices through dialogue”為that引導的定語從句,修飾先行詞conversations。 1. What does the first paragraph imply? A.Heated discussions are often carried out among people. B.Open dialogue cant always lead to close relations. C.People with opposing views are not honest enough. D.We tend to have open dialogue with people around us. 根據(jù)第一段第一句“In this day and age,it may seem that getting two people with different views together to discuss them is a recipe for disaster.” 2.What will readers get at a Human Library? A.A fair judgment. B.Unpleasant ments. C.An available experience. D.Regaining confidence. 根據(jù)第四段第二句“At the Human Library, you actually feel better about the world you live in.” 3.Which of the following can replace the underlined “l(fā)aunch” in Para. 6 in meaning? A.Accelerate. B.Substitute. C.Succeed. D.Start. 根據(jù)第六段第二句中的“And as events now spread throughout 82 countries, with the Human Libraries even set to launch soon in Pakistan and Jordan”可知,隨著該活動在82個國家開展,Human Library甚至將很快在巴基斯坦和約旦啟動。 4.What did Abergel advise people to do to get real safety? A.Strengthen bonds between people. B.Join other groups in the munity. C.Pull down walls between munities. D.Spend less money on homeland security. 根據(jù)第七段最后Abergel所說的話“Real safety is not going to e from building walls. Its going to e from reaching out and getting to know each other”可知,Abergel認為,真正的安全不是來自建筑城墻,而是來自伸出援手和相互了解,故A項正確。 Being Refreshed without Sleeping Sometimes there is just not enough hours in the day to get everything done and get a good nights rest.__1__ Once in a while you can get away with a sleepless night and still feel reasonably good by adjusting your meals and activities. ●__2__ The last thing you want to do when you are tired is get warm and cosy;this will cause you to fall asleep.Keeping the air conditioner on will make you feel much more awake and refreshed. ●Eat small amounts.Eating small amounts of healthy food will help refresh you.Fruit and nuts are a good choice because they are nutritious and will energize you.__3__ Try to stick to lowcarb meals to keep you going.Chewing gum after your small meal will also help keep you awake. ●Keep it bright. When it is dark your body thinks it is time to go to sleep.Turn on lots of lights, which will trick your body into waking up and feeling better.__4__ You get double the benefits if it is daytime. ●Take a break.Taking a little break will help you in the long run, Turn up some energizing music to get yourself positive.Relax and talk to a friend in person or on the phone for a few minutes.__5__ A.Keep it cool.
