We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet. I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打擾) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it. Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better. 1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author? A. He built shelters for them. B. He gave immediate first aid to them. C. He came to stay with them. D. He brought mental health professionals. 2.What did the author do when his friend’s mother passed away? A. He hesitated over whether to go. B. He went to his friends’ at once. C. He knew what to do instantly. D. He decided not to disturb. 3.What does the underlined word "solemn" in Paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Heavy but warm. B. A little sad but cosy. C. Relaxing and delightful. D. Very serious and unhappy. 4.What has the author learned from his experience? A. A friend in need is a friend indeed. B. Being present can make a big difference. C. The family harmony is the happiest thing in life. D. Being a volunteer can make one’s life more significant. 根據(jù)第一段末we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激)from the first person we met….I hadn’t really done anything yet. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. B。 B People love cellphones, which is why nine in ten Americans own one.But does heavy use of cellphones pose a risk of cancer? This question has caused controversy for many years. A new study in rats now augments those concerns. Its data linked longterm, intense exposure to radiation from cellphones with an increased risk of cancer in the heart or brain. The results have yet to be confirmed, the authors note. Indeed, although the rat study found a link between cellphone radiation and cancer, it offers no clues to why such a link might exist, notes Jonathan Samet. He teaches preventative medicine and directs the Institute for Global Health at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.Still, he calls the new study’s findings “significant”.They could lead to studies researching how cellphone radiation might cause cancer, he says. Phone signals are relayed between cell towers and cellphones via radio waves. This radio frequency—or RF—radiation is a type known as nonionizing(非電離的). Unlike Xrays, nonionizing radiation does not deposit enough energy into cells to release electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions.So it tends to be far less harmful than ionizing radiation, such as Xrays. But that does not mean radio waves might not cause harm. In very large doses(量) this radiation will heat the body and cause tissue damage. But it’s not yet known what much lower RF levels might do, such as those from cellphone use.Five years ago, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, or IARC, concluded that cellphone use “is possibly carcinogenic(致癌的)”. Its conclusion was based on what little research data was available at that time. But notice that IARC was not certain. It said only that phone use might “possibly” cause cancer. So scientists at the National Toxicology Program, or NTP, investigated further. 1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “augments”? A.figures out B.puts out C.refers to D.a(chǎn)dds to D 畫線詞前面提到過度使用手機(jī)是否有患癌的風(fēng)險這一問題多年來引發(fā)的爭議不斷,再根據(jù)畫線詞后的“concerns”和“Its data linked longterm, intense exposure to radiation from cellphones with an increased risk of cancer in the heart or brain.” 2.In which aspect does Jonathan Samet think the new study in rats is significant? A.It assists him with his teaching. B.It indicates a new research direction. C.It warns people to mind cellphone safety. D.It makes a breakthrough in cancer research. 3.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A.How phone signals are delivered. B.How cellphones produce radiation. C.Features of radiation from cellphones. D.Differences between ionizing and nonionizing radiation. 根據(jù)第三段的“nonionizing radiation does not deposit enough energy into cells to release electrons from atoms or molecules, producing ions.So it tends to be far less harmful than ionizing radiation...” 4.What might be the theme of NTP scientists’ further research? A.Why cellphone use causes cancer. B.Whether cellphone use really causes cancer. C.What health effects cellphone use has. D.How much exposure to cellphone radiation is safe. 根據(jù)最后一段中的“It said only that phone use might ‘possibly’ cause cancer. So scientists at the National Toxicology Program, or NTP, investigated further.” (開頭已給出,不計入總字?jǐn)?shù)) We Should Lesson the Test Anxiety As the College Entrance Examination draws near, quite a few of my classmates suffer much pressure._____________________________________________________________________ 【參考范文】書面表達(dá): We Should Lesson the Test Anxiety As the College Entrance Examination draws near, quite a few of my classmates suffer much pressure. Some of them bury themselves in endless homework day and night against the clock, which robs them of happiness and does them harm physically and mentally. Although pressure, to some extent, can provide motivation, overdue pressure has a serious negative affect. Pressure can destroy a student’s confidence. More seriously it might make some students lose control of their emotions and behaviors. Considering the great damage of overdue pressure, we should learn how to relieve pressure. First, we should have a right evaluation of ourselves, so it’s to make use of advantages and avoid disadvantages. Second, we’d better squeeze out some time for fun such as listening to music. Sometimes even crying is an effcient way to release stress. Finally, if you find pressure is nearly beyond your control, you’d better turn to professional psychological guidance.- 1.
