At that point it had already been under construction for over a decade. It had been voted to be built nearly a quarter of a century ago! The idea to build it could date back to nearly 70 years ago — about as old as some of your grandparents! Yesterday, it was finally ready! It's about 35 miles long and runs 7,500 feet beneath the Swiss Alps, a famous mountain range in Switzerland. It even runs under an old tunnel that was there before. It took a total of 17 years to build at a cost of $12 billion! 28 million tons of rock were dug. Two million truckloads of earth were removed! The tunnel connects northern and southern Europe. The opening of this tunnel was such a big deal that the Germany's leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, France's president, Francois Hollande, and Italy's prime minister, Matteo Renzi, were all there to celebrate, as was Austria's chancellor Christian Kern. It's called the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Eventually, 325 freight and passenger trains will go through the tunnel, relieving a lot of traffic on the roadways there and making it a more environmentally friendly option. The Gotthard Base Tunnel is a wonder of engineering and makes us want to visit it! The opening of this tunnel was such a big deal that the Germany's leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel, France's president, Francois Hollande, and Italy's prime minister, Matteo Renzi, were all there to celebrate, as was Austria's chancellor Christian Kern. 分析:本句含有such... that... 5.When did people first have the idea of building the tunnel? A.About 70 years ago. B.Half a century ago. C.Twenty five years ago. D.Seven years ago. 從文章第一段最后一句“The idea to build it could date back to nearly 70 years ago — about as old as some of your grandparents”可知,大約70年前人們第一次有建造該隧道的想法。故選A項。 6.What can we learn about the tunnel? A.It used to be an old tunnel. B.It has just been pleted. C.It connects all European countries. D.It runs over a range of mountains. 從文章第二段“Yesterday, it was finally ready”可知,該隧道剛剛竣工。故選B項。 干擾項分析:A項錯在“used to be an old tunnel”,與文章第三段第二句的“It even runs under an old tunnel”不符;C項錯在“all European countries”,與第四段的“connects northern and southern Europe”不符;D項錯在“over”,與第三段第一句的“beneath”不符。 7.What may be the purpose of building the tunnel? A.To improve traffic. B.To increase employment. C.To attract donation. D.To stop pollution. 從文章最后一段的“relieving a lot of traffic on the roadways there and making it a more environmentally friendly option”可知,該鐵路隧道修建的目的是緩解交通壓力。故選A項。 8.What can be inferred about the tunnel? A.It will cause conflicts among countries. B.It will be of little benefit to the locals. C.It may do damage to the environment. D.It may bee a tourist attraction. 從文章最后一句中的“makes us want to visit it”可推知,該鐵路隧道可能會成為一個旅游勝地。故選D項。 干擾項分析:A項“它將會造成國家間的沖突”在文中未體現(xiàn);B項錯在“l(fā)ittle benefit”,與文章最后一段的“relieving a lot of traffic”不符;C項錯在“do damage to the environment”,與文章最后一段的“more environmentally friendly”不符。 C (xx·煙臺診斷) In an effort to discourage people from using plastics, scientists have been hard at work inventing alternative packaging products. From water bottles made from seaweed to cutlery (餐具) made from rice and wheat, a number of inventions are set to change the way we eat while we are on the go, or having a relaxing picnic in the park. The idea of using seaweed to make eco-friendly (環(huán)保的) water bottles has been around for a few years. Recently, Ari Jonsson took his invention — a water bottle made from red seaweed — to show off at a festival. The bottles will only hold their shape as long as they are filled. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin to break down, though they would be perfectly safe to eat. Ari Jonsson's bottles are a step closer to a widely used alternative to the current plastic ones. The eatable water container is not the only product to add to our image of the future. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. After the success of his spoons, Mr. Pessapaty is ready to expand and introduce forks and chopsticks to his menu. His aim is to largely reduce the amount of plastic waste, which is a huge problem for waste sites all over the world. It is a product that may take up to 500 years to break down, and recycling panies worldwide are struggling to deal with it. Aside from the obvious benefits to the environment, this new packaging is also cheap to produce and therefore cheap to buy. Even better is the fact that similar eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just fun with friends. Why not get experimenting and create your own recipes? 9.Why do scientists invent alternative packaging products? A.To make people's life more convenient. B.To reduce the amount of plastic waste. C.To change the way we picnic outside. D.To show off their inventive talents. In an effort to discourage people from using plastics... 10.What makes Ari Jonsson's water bottles eco-friendly? A.They can be made at home. B.They are cheap to produce and buy. C.They will hold their shape when they are filled. D.They will break down themselves when empty. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin to break down... The bottles will only hold their shape as long as they are filled.(瓶子只有在滿的時候才能定型)而誤選C項,這只是介紹了這種水瓶的特性,而不是這些水瓶環(huán)保的原因,真正的原因是它們在水倒空時,會自我分解。 11.What do Ari and Narayana's inventions have in mon? A.They are convenient to carry. B.They are safe to eat. C.They can be used for a short time. D.They are heavier than plastics. 根據(jù)第二段第四句... though they would be perfectly safe to eat. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. 12.What can be inferred from this passage? A.Home-made eatable cutlery is likely to be popular. B.Eatable cutlery will pletely replace plastics in the near future. C.No recycling panies can break down plastic waste. D.It's unsafe for individuals to invent eatable cutlery at home. Even better is the fact that similar eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just fun with friends. 故選A項。- 1.
