Manners are very important in every country but the trouble is that different countries have different ideas about what good behavior (行為) and good manners are.It is easy for us,nowadays,to travel abroad,so it is important to learn a little about what to do (and what not to do) in a foreign country.English “good” manners will perhaps shock (使……震驚) a foreigner.
When an Englishman passes a friend in the street,he only touches his hat.He does not shake hands when he stops to talk.
At a party he does not introduce himself to the other guests, but waits for the host or hostess (女主人) to do so,like this:
Host:Mrs.Green,I don’t think you know Mr.Bowman,do you?
Mrs.Green:No,I don’t think so.How do you do?
Mr.Bowman:How do you do?
Mrs.Green and Mr.Bowman don’t say their names,as their host has already said them and they probably don’t shake hands. At dinner an Englishman does not wait for a toast (祝酒) before he has a drink, and he does not propose toast to any other guests, unless he has been asked to make a normal speech. After dinner he does not shake hands with the hostess and thank her for the dinner, and at the end of the evening,he puts his coat on saying “Goodbye”.He says goodbye to everyone at once and as quickly as possible,as he does not want the others to think it is time to leave just because he is leaving.
56.It is necessary to learn something about good manners in England because ________.
A.the manners are the same as those in other countries
B.the manners will make a foreigner surprised
C.Englishmen would not like to shake hands with others
D.Englishmen don’t know what they should do and what they should not do

C.himself D.all the guests
58.The underlined word “propose” in the passage means ________.
A.take part in B.toast

Imagine a baby, having difficulty breathing when he was born. What this tiny baby needs badly is a respirator,a device that will help him breathe to live on.
The first highly reliable, medical respirator in the world was invented by Forrest Bird.Often called the “Babybird” respirator, this wonderful device reduced baby deaths across the world.
Forrest Bird was born in Massachusetts,USA.His father was a World War Ⅰ pilot and encouraged his son to fly at a very early age.By 14,Bird could fly an airplane by himself.
He joined the Air force as a technical air training officer during World War Ⅱ.This gave him a chance to fly a wide variety of airplanes. Some of these were designed to fly very high,at altitudes where a pilot would find it difficult to breathe.
This problem aroused Bird’s imagination. He wanted to create devices, which would aid breathing in such altitudes. So deep was he absorbed in it that he quit his job,and went back to attend medical school.Studying medicine gave him an insight into the complete workings of the human system. He understood the mechanics of human breathing.
And the first “respirator” was made.Bird had developed the first device, which could help people breathe. This invention of Bird, however, was to be used, not by pilots, but by seriously ill patients with breathing difficulty. So earnest was he that he traveled in his own airplane to medical schools and asked doctors for their most ill patients. If these patients were not aided with the respirator, they would die.He tested the device on such patients. This test itself saved many lives.
The respirator became a great success and was known as “the bird”.It was a common statement among doctors to say,“if all else has failed, get the bird”.“The bird” was a little green box which became familiar to hospital patients throughout the world after it was introduced in 1958.
60.It can be inferred from the passage that Bird became a pilot because ________.
A.it was his dream
B.his father encouraged him to
C.he liked flying planes
D.he attended a flying school
61.The fact that ________ inspired Bird to invent the respirator.

62.The underlined word “quit” in the fifth paragraph probably means ________.
A.stopped B.continued
C.kept D.found
63.The sentence “if all else has failed, get the bird” in the last paragraph is used to show ________.
A.doctors were fond of the bird
B.doctors raised a bird to cure patients
C.doctors couldn’t cure patients without the respirator
D.the respirator was very successful

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work.A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career.A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work.So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard.Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value.A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects, you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in summer, think what you gained from it.If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time,to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example.Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be_all_thumbs when you handle tools;perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist.Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic (愧疚的) about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
64.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of working hard at school.
