閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。
At the center of the mall was the perfect Santa with a gentle manner and a real white beard. My six-year-old granddaughter,Leah, jumped from foot to foot as we waited in line for her turn to sit on his lap.
“I don’t know what to say,” Leah said, raising her neck around the kids in front of her.
“Sure you do,”her mother,Leanne, said.“It’s Santa. He’s already your friend. You’ll do just fine.”
“He’ll ask you what you want for Christmas,” I said.“And you just tell him.”
We’d gone over and over the toys she’d ask for.Her mother didn’t want surprises! Leah repeated the list. But a minute later, she inserted new toys she’d just spotted at the mall.
“I’ve got an idea,” said Leanne, digging into her purse as the line inched forward.“Let’s write down your requests so you won’t forget them.” I couldn’t help but laugh.Going to see Santa was such an important appointment for a six-year-old.No child should have any worries bigger than that. But the night before,on the news,I’d seen a village in the Middle East that had come under fire. Many of the wounded were children just like our Leah.Looking around the mall full of magical decorations and happy shoppers I felt safe,as safe as anyone could be.Everyone in the world should have that kind of security, especially at Christmas.
“Okay,” Leanne said.“Now you’ve got everything you want written down here.If you get nervous you can just give the note to Santa.”
Leah nodded and took the list. She read out loud,“A Chia Pet,Moon Sand and Aquadoodle.”
“Why don’t you add a fourth request,Leah,” I heard myself say.“Ask for peace on earth.” My daughter looked a little surprised by my suggestion.
“What’s peace on earth,Grandma?” Leah asked.
“Peace on earth means all the people in the world would get along. That’s the true meaning of Christmas.” Leah nodded seriously.“Yes,” she agreed.

Finally we reached the head of the line. One of Santa’s helpers waved Leah up to Santa and lifted her lightly onto his knee.Within seconds he had her chatting like they were old friends.Leah shyly handed him her note.Santa adjusted his glasses and read it over very carefully before placing it on the shelf beside him.Leah jumped off his lap and ran into my arms.
The coming days were filled with the last-minute preparations for the holiday. It was all worth it as I watched Leah tear joyfully into her presents on Christmas morning.“I got Aquadoodle!”she screamed.“It’s just what I wanted!”It was the perfect Christmas as far as I could see.And then I noticed Leah, looking somewhat unhappy.“What’s wrong, honey?”I asked.Leanne came over,“Didn’t Santa bring you everything you wanted?”Leah sighed.“Almost,”she said,“But where’s the peace on earth?”

I worked from the time I was four and raised seven children, all of them college graduates. It seemed I’d done everything I’d ever wanted to do in my life, but I had one regret.I was born in 1898,the oldest of five kids.Papa couldn’t spare me to go to school,so I worked in the fields with him till I was 21 years old.
Everywhere I went,I learned some hard lessons about what happens to a man who even can’t read the alphabet.People cheat you out of wages. They sell you a ticket to one city, take your money and hand you a ticket to somewhere else.
By 1928,I’d been wandering for nine years.I met a woman named Elzenia. We fell in love, married and moved to Dallas, where I got work fixing roads for the city. When Amelia, the oldest of our seven children, first went to school,I took my wife aside.“Elzenia,” I said.“I don’t want the kids to know I can’t read or write.”
In 1938,one day my boss called me in. “George,” he said. “No one knows those machines like you do.I’d like to promote you.” But my thrill and surprise were cut short when he said,“Fill out this application and we’ll get you a raise.” I couldn’t admit the truth.I thanked him and walked out of his office.I did stay right where I was, until I turned 65 and my boss made me retire. But I didn’t stop working. For the next 25 years,I lived a happy life, but it still seemed to me like something was missing.
A young fellow handed me a piece of paper. It’s information about adult education classes. People can learn to read and write. Now I’m 98. I thought of my friends and neighbors and what they might think if they found out I couldn’t read. After all these years,my secret would be out.But all my life I’ve wanted to read.It was high time for action.

The young man drove me to an old building.I knew it well—it was where all my children had gone to school.I looked into the classroom to get a look at who I would be going to school with the next day.The students all looked like babies to me.There was a lady in her fifties but most of the rest were in their twenties and thirties.I went back to the school the next day.I’d been inside the building so many times before with my children. That old building looked the same, and it smelled the same. But this time it was different because this time it was going to be my school.First came learning the alphabet, then words. In three months,I was reading. It was not very exciting, but I loved it.
I’m still going to school.I didn’t stop there. After all,now I know why I’m here.I’m here to learn.I’m here to tell the students it’s never too late.

Whenever Mr.Smith goes to Westgate,he stays at the Grand Hotel.Despite its name,it is really not very “grand”,but it is cheap, clean, and comfortable.Since he knows the manager well,he never has to go to the trouble of reserving a room. The fact is that he always gets the same room.It is located at the far end of the building.
On his last visit,Mr.Smith was told that he could have his usual room, but the manager added apologetically that it might be a little noisy. So great was the demand for rooms, the manager said, that the hotel had decided to build a new wing.Mr.Smith said he did not mind.It amused him to think that the dear old Grand Hotel was making an effort to live up to its name.
During the first day Mr.Smith hardly noticed the noise at all.The room was a little dusty, but that was natural. The following afternoon,he borrowed a book from the hotel library and went upstairs to read.No sooner had he sat down than he heard someone hammering loudly at the wall.At first he paid no attention, but after a while he began to feel very uncomfortable. His clothes were slowly being covered with fine white powder.Soon there was so much dust in the room that he began to cough. The hammering was now louder than ever and bits of plaster were coming away from the walls. It looked as though the whole building was going to fall.Mr.Smith went immediately to complain to the manager. They both returned to the room, but everything was very quiet. As they stood there looking at each other,Mr.Smith felt rather embarrassed for having dragged the manager all the way up the stairs for nothing.

All of a sudden, the hammering began again and a large brick landed on the floor.Looking up,they saw a sharp metal tool had forced its way through the wall, making a very large hole right above the bed!So tense was the situation that the manager almost let out a scream. In no time they both felt the whole building was vibrating. Then came more white powder and dust dropping down. Before Mr.Smith could make out what had happened, the manager was nowhere to be found.
A year later, when Mr.Smith went to Westgate again,he was surprised to find a modern building had been set up in what used to be the Grand Hotel. It turned out that after he angrily left the place a year ago,the manager decided to pull the building down to make it live up to its name.To show his sincere apology for his sudden disappearance, the manager promised the room at the far end of the building would always be reserved for Mr.Smith.

My 14-year-old son,John, and I spotted the coat at the exactly same time. It was hanging on a rack at a second-h(huán)and clothing store. While the other coats drooped, this one looked as if it were holding itself up.The coat, with a Fifth Avenue label, soft and unworn, had a black velvet collar, beautiful tailoring and was popular just then with teenage boys, charging an unbelievable price of $28.
John’s eyes gleamed. He turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror with a serious, studied expression that soon changed into a smile. The fit was perfect.
John wore the coat to school the next day and came home wearing a big grin.“Did the kids like your coat?”I asked.
“They loved it,”he said, carefully folding it over the back of a chair and smoothing it flat.I started calling him “Lord Chesterfield” and “The Great Gatsby”.Over the next few weeks,a change came over John.Agreement replaced contrariness(作對),quiet, reasoned discussion replaced argument. He became more mannerly, more thoughtful, eager to please.
“Good dinner,Mom,” he would say every evening. He would generously loan his younger brother his tapes and lecture him on the nice ties of behavior;without a word of objection,he would carry in wood for the stove.
One day when I mentioned these incidents to one of his teachers and remarked that I didn’t know what caused the changes. She said laughing,“It must be his coat!” Another teacher told him she was giving him a good mark not only because he had earned it but because she liked his coat.
At the library,we ran into a friend who had not seen our children in a long time.“Could this be John?” he asked, looking up to John’s new height, assessing the cut of his coat and extending his hand, one gentleman to another.

John and I both know we should never mistake a person’s clothes for the real person within them. But the changes taking place to John put me onto another level of how to judge another person and how to have perfect behavior. Why not wear a standard of excellence for the world to see? That way, every dawn we open eyes, beginning with practicing standards of excellence in thought, speech, and behavior, till the moment the head touches the pillow.Everything we think is how to match what is on the inside to what is on the outside to make us a real gentleman. To some extent, the delight of behaving well itself is a reward.
The whole world, the whole future is stretched out ahead,a vast landscape where all the doors are open. And if only I could be a teenager again! It was a time when we could try on different approaches to life as it was to try on a coat.Wearing my wonderful, magical coat,I would picture myself walking through those doors with a light heart as a gentleman-to-be,heading forward confidently no matter what the future will be like.

閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所給情節(jié)進行續(xù)寫,使之構(gòu)成一個完整的故事。
A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty glass jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks right to the top, rocks about two inches in diameter.
He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles,of course, rolled into the open spaces between the rocks. The students laughed.
He asked his students again if the jar was full. They agreed:yes,it was.
The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up all the remaining spaces.
“Now,” said the professor,“I want you to recognize that this is your life.”
The rocks are the most important things—your family, your partner, your health, your children—anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed. The pebbles are the other things in life that matter, but on a smaller scale. The pebbles represent things like your job, your house, your car.The sand is everything else—the small stuff.
If you put the sand or the pebbles into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks. The same goes for your life.If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff,or material things, you will never have room for the things that are truly most important.Pay attention to the things that are critical in your life.Play with your children.Take your partner out dancing.Talk with your parents. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.“Take care of the rocks first—the things that really matter.Set your priorities. The rest is just pebbles and sand. They will take care of themselves.”

Later, students were asked to voice their own understandings.A student rose, saying shamefully that he only focused on his own small stuff, even enjoying all kinds of amusement rather than accompanying his parents.Another student continued, pointing out that taking care of family is really the most important thing in our life. What’s more,a good idea was put forward that everyone should reflect on his life, making room for critical things and creating a meaningful life. The professor nodded his head with a bright smile, encouraging more opinions.
A creative student compared the empty jar to time, which aroused great interests among the class. He explained that the way we filled the empty glass jar was the way we made use of our time.We seldom think carefully about it.Therefore,we usually waste time doing a lot of small stuff firstly, leaving less time to deal with the things that matter. For instance,we are easily addicted to games, preparing poorly for our examinations due to the limited time. Thus,it’s high time that we should change ourselves after class.
